Audi Celebrates the Opening of Its New Renewable Energy Plant in Germany

As automakers have been increasing efforts to develop eco-friendly practices at production plants, Audi has made some major strides in this area. The recent opening of its new renewable energy E-gas Plant in Werlte, Germany is a major accomplishment, especially considering it makes Audi the first automaker to create a series of sustainable energy carriers. We're excited to share with all of you in the greater Marietta, GA area, how the plant operates.

The new power-to-gas facility will produce Audi e-gas, a synthetic methane gas that is made from renewable electricity and electrolysis. Essentially, water, CO2 and green electricity are combined to create hydrogen and synthetic gas.

According to Audi, the resulting energy will be enough to power 1,500 Audi A3 Sportback G-tron vehicles for about 9,321 miles annually. This is about 1,000 metric tons of e-gas produced from the chemical binding of 2,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide. To put this into perspective, this is comparable to the how much is absorbed by a forest of about 220,000 beech trees over the course of a year. Quite impressive.

Head of Total Vehicle Development, Heinz Hollerweger, explains Audi's commitment to these initiatives, stating, "Audi is taking a giant step toward the mobility of the future today. Audi is the only manufacturer worldwide with such innovative technology. Research into synthetic, environment-friendly fuels is the core of our vigorous e-fuels strategy."1
